Like all operations, lasik laser surgery also has its own risks. Nothing is ever “risk free”. Some complications arise, and in some cases, people suffer from certain conditions after lasik laser surgery. If you are considering laser eye surgery, you are well advised to know the risks:
Wrong focus on light
Laser eye surgery is centered on the pupil and any improper incision will result in improper ability to focus on light. Many lasers have an eye-tracking radiation to reduce any possibility of a de-centered incisions.
Accelerated cataract haze
Although a natural occurrence, caused by age, cataracts – clouding of the crystalline lens – may be accelerated by invasive cataract laser surgery.
Inaccurate correction due to temperature
Temperature and humidity in the laser room, hydration of the cornea during the operation and calibration of the lasers could lead to under-correction. This would cause additional laser treatment after three months in order to stabilize the results. Although rare, over-correction can be a short-term prerequisite for a hyperopic condition. Again, this can be corrected with further surgery.
Astigmatism
Sometimes surgery can cause astigmatism. Although the causes are not known, the orientation of the patient’s eyes and uniformity of the laser beam could be the cause. This can be corrected by glasses or gas permeable contact lenses.
Loss of visual acuity
Treatment could cause loss of visual acuity. Assume that a pre-operative vision of 20/400 without glasses and contact lenses, and a 20/20 vision with them improved after laser surgery to 20/30 without glasses and contact lenses, and 20/20 vision with glasses and contact lenses thinner. They would have lost visual acuity, when the post-surgery 20/30 vision can not be improved, even with glasses and contact lenses. This can happen in 5% of low to medium myopia patients.
Corneal haze condition
Another result be a clouding of the cornea, a ground-glass appearance, after laser eye surgery. A smaller haze might be taken care of with the provision of anti-inflammatory eye drops. A dense haze may require further treatment.
Drop in night vision
It may be that a decline in night vision, halon and the star explodes, etc are part of the side effects. Your vision can be reduced especially to, brightness and glare. In very rare cases, there is always a possibility of blindness and a likely eye infection endophthalmitis.
Lasik eye surgery is generally safe but there is always a risk of post-operative infections. Typically, this is not about long-term complications, and usually with eye drops. When undecided about the risks of laser eye surgery, discuss the pros and cons with your doctor.
